Ngentseni ngenye imini, umakhulu kaVusi wabiza u Vusi, “Vusi, thatha eliqanda uyolinika abazali bakho. Bafuna ukubhaka ikeyiki enkulu yomtshato wa dade wenu.”

Early one morning Vusi’s granny called him, “Vusi, please take this egg to your parents. They want to make a large cake for your sister’s wedding.”

UVusi endleleni eya kubazali bakhe wadibana namakhwenkwe amabini ekha iziqhamo. Omnye wamakhwenkwe wathatha iqanda ku Vusi waliphosa emthini. Iqanda laqhephuka.

On his way to his parents, Vusi met two boys picking fruit. One boy grabbed the egg from Vusi and shot it at a tree. The egg broke.

“Wenze ntoni?” wakhala uVusi. “Eliqanda belizokwenza ikeyiki ya dade wam. Keyiki eyo yeyomtshato wakhe. Ndizakuthini ku dade wam xakwenzeka kungabikho keyiki yomtshato?”

“What have you done?” cried Vusi. “That egg was for a cake. The cake was for my sister’s wedding. What will my sister say if there is no wedding cake?”

Amakhwenkwe axolisa ngokumqala u Vusi. “Asinokwazi ngokukunceda nge keyiki kodwa singakunika igqola eli ulinike udade wenu”, watsho omnye wamakhwenkwe ayeme noVusi. UVusi wathabatha igqola waqhubeka nohambo lwakhe ukuya ebazalini bakhe.

The boys were sorry for teasing Vusi. “We can’t help with the cake, but here is a walking stick for your sister,” said one. Vusi continued on his journey.

Endleleni wadibana namadoda amabini akha indlu. “Singasebenzisa elogqola lakho libonaka lomile kwaye linamadla?” yatsho enye yanka madoda. Gqola eli lalingenawo amandla kwaye yayingathi lingaqhephuka nanini na lingakulungelanga ukusetyenziswa ekwakheni indlu. Balithatha balisebenzisa linjalo, laye laqhephuka.

Along the way he met two men building a house. “Can we use that strong stick?” asked one. But the stick was not strong enough for building, and it broke.

“Wenze ntoni?” wakhala kwakhona uVusi. “Eligqola bekusisipho sika dade wam endisifumane kumakhwenkwe bewesikha iziqhamo kuba ephule iqanda ebelizokwenza ikeyiki ka dade wam. Lo keyiki ibizoba yeyomtshato wakhe. Ngoku akukho qanda, akukho keyiki kwaye akukho sipho eso. Uzakuthini udade wam?”

“What have you done?” cried Vusi. “That stick was a gift for my sister. The fruit pickers gave me the stick because they broke the egg for the cake. The cake was for my sister’s wedding. Now there is no egg, no cake, and no gift. What will my sister say?”

Abasebenzi baxolisa ngokophula igqola lakhe. “Asinokwazi ukukunceda nge keyiki, kodwa nantsi ingca esingakunika yona uyinike udade wenu”, watsho omnye wamadoda akhayo. Wathabatha ingca u Vusi waqhubeka nohambo lwakhe.

The builders were sorry for breaking the stick. “We can’t help with the cake, but here is some thatch for your sister,” said one. And so Vusi continued on his journey.

Endleleni u Vusi wadibana nomlimi nenkomo. ” Yaze yabonakala intle ingca oyphethe, ndingafumana kuyo okuncinane nditye?” yabuza inkomo. Wavuma u Vusi yatya inkomo. Ingca leyo kwacaca imnandi kakhulu yaza inkomo yayitya yonke yayigqiba!

Along the way, Vusi met a farmer and a cow. “What delicious thatch, can I have a nibble?” asked the cow. But the thatch was so tasty that the cow ate it all!

“Wenze ntoni?” wakhala kwakhona u Vusi. ” Le ngca ibisisipho sika dade wam endisinikwe ngabasenzi kuba bophule igqola endilifumene kumakhwenkwe abewekha iziqhamo. Anko makhwenkwe andinike eligqola kuba baqhephule iqanda ebelizokwenza ikeyiki kadade wam yomtshato. Ngoku akukho qanda, keyiki, kwaye akukho sipho. Uzakuthini udade wam?”

“What have you done?” cried Vusi. “That thatch was a gift for my sister. The builders gave me the thatch because they broke the stick from the fruit pickers. The fruit pickers gave me the stick because they broke the egg for my sister’s cake. The cake was for my sister’s wedding. Now there is no egg, no cake, and no gift. What will my sister say?”

Nkomo leyo yaxolisa ngokuba nentliziyo ende igqibe ingca. Umlimi wandula ngokuthi inkomo ihambe no Vusi kube yiyo isipho sikadade wakhe somtshato. Bagqiba ngelo waze uVusi waqhubeka nohambo lwakhe.

The cow was sorry she was greedy. The farmer agreed that the cow could go with Vusi as a gift for his sister. And so Vusi carried on.

Yaqhwesha yaphindela kumlimi inkomo xakubetha ixesha lesidlo sasebusuku. Kwaye uVusi walahleka endleleni awayeyihamba. Wafika sele ixesha limshiyile emtshatweni ka dade wakhe kwaye indwendwe nabakhaphi sele besitya.

But the cow ran back to the farmer at supper time. And Vusi got lost on his journey. He arrived very late for his sister’s wedding. The guests were already eating.

“Ndenze njani?” wakhala uVusi. “Inkomo endize nayo ibalekile, nkomo leyo ibiyisisipho endisifumene ngengca endiyinikwe ngamadoda akhayo. Madoda awo andinike lengca kuba bophule igqola lam, gqola elo ndilinikwe ngamakhwenkwe bewekha iziqhamo. Anko makhwenkwe andinike iqhola elo kuba bophule iqanda bekumele ndilizise lizokwenza ikeyiki yomtshato. Ngoku akukho qanda, keyiki kwaye akukho neso sipho”

“What shall I do?” cried Vusi. “The cow that ran away was a gift, in return for the thatch the builders gave me. The builders gave me the thatch because they broke the stick from the fruit pickers. The fruit pickers gave me the stick because they broke the egg for the cake. The cake was for the wedding. Now there is no egg, no cake, and no gift.”

Udade wa Vusi wathula wacinga okomzuzwana wandula ngelithi “Vusi bhuti wam, eneneni andinandaba nezipho. Andikhathalelanga kwa eyo keyiki! Sonke silapha ndawonye, lonto iyandonwabisa. Into ekumele uyenze kukunxiba iimpahla zakho ezintle zomtshato ubeke ezi zikhatheleyo ubuzinxibileyo uze uzokubhiyoza nathi ngolusuku!” Wenza njengoko exelelwe u Vusi.

Vusi’s sister thought for a while, then she said, “Vusi my brother, I don’t really care about gifts. I don’t even care about the cake! We are all here together, I am happy. Now put on your smart clothes and let’s celebrate this day!” And so that’s what Vusi did.
